Deaf group concerned with sign language use at prefecture assembly

March 21, 2015

Hyogo Prefecture:

Responding to the problem that the assembly member who introduced himself using sign language before a general question at the  prefecture assembly plenary session was warned by the assembly secretariat, the Prefecture Association of the Deaf has submitted a letter of request on March 13 to the Prefecture Assembly Chairperson so that anyone can use sign language freely at the assembly.

The letter stated: Assuming that "sign language is a language", the Association asked about recognition of sign language and pointed out that "To be different in handling of sign language as the same Japanese is a question." As prescribed in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Association requested to promote the use of sign language even at the assembly.
